What started out as fanciful science fiction stories of machines derived from steam engines, like Frankenstein, Around the World in Eighty Days, and The War of the Worlds, ushered in a whole new lifestyle. As the Industrial and Victorian ages and decor blended into one, a genre—of goggles and plague masks; leather corsets and lace petticoats; top hats and tails; riveted metal and wispy, translucent curtains; the voyages of pirates and a gothic-Alice-in-Wonderland, and many other contraries—was born.
